Business Plans

The Value of Business Plans:

One of the most important benefits of creating your business plan is the clarity it provides for your business. Whether you put together a basic five-page document or an extensive 25 pages, you should simply do one for yourself. We can help consult on the needs you have, through a SWOT analysis.

How can we help You? My first Business Plan was for a company I started in 1997 (LightYear Technologies Inc).  I was considering a partner (an associate I’d known for years who liked my idea). My mentor recommended I do a basic Business Plan… great advice! The Business Plan provided the clarity I needed. I ultimately decided to be sole proprietor, which turned out to be the best decision I ever made. I saved a large amount of money in profits over four years.

Business Plans Guide You Through Start-Up Phase:
My Lawyer and Accountant had also suggested I could accomplish my goals as the sole owner… advice that was invaluable. I was providing the “intellectual property” and business contacts, and the Business Plan helped me make the best decisions and use the profits to expand as I saw fit. I ran this business for 4 years, made very good profits and eventually sold the company.  A Business plan has many advantages and this one played a significant role in my start-up.

On Vancouver Island, there are so many entrepreneurial opportunities. We have an incredible talent base in BC and Asset Consulting works with many owners who bring a real contribution to the community. These owners let us know that they often need professional guidance: Business Plans, Branding, Marketing and Digital Advertising. Asset Consulting happens to be qualified to help in those areas as well.

Business Plans are Integral to Partnering Decisions:
A Business Plan is effective when funding or business partners are needed and the process provides clarity for your company. LightYear was my first company and it was self financed without the need for investors. I ran it from 1997 – 2001 until ARC International acquired the company… and me and I joined Arc as a Director and their Global Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

Large Corporate Entities:
Previous to my start-up, ten years of Motorola training was integral to my success, laying the groundwork to make decisions that would chart the path of LightYear. The Business Plan gave me the foundation I needed, allowing me to describe the premise of the business to associates and employees. The Business Plan helped me negotiate contracts with several manufacturers along the way.  The experience also prepared me to become Vice President of ARC as a large technology business that involved an IPO (USD$250M), Mergers and Acquisitions. Over ten years with Motorola was instrumental in helping me perfect the planning processes. Motorola had ongoing education programs to help employees live by their Six Sigma quality methodology. I had many systems and processes ingrained in me during my tenure with Motorola. I have the resources to create Business Plans effectively because of the foundations Motorola provided. I can help your business as well using this knowledge.

Business Plans Become a Core Document for your Business:
I’ve since created Business Plans for First Nations, Retail, Transportation companies and it’s an important part of ownership. Businesses may be looking for investors, partners, venture capital, banking or from other lending firms. A business may be looking at property leases, locations and office space, that requires formal company documentation and more. Business Plans are a necessary component for success.

Using SWOT Analysis as an Important Asset of a Business Plan:
I’m a proponent of SWOT because it gives the owner(s) a chance to document those Strengths/Weaknesses/Opportunities/Threats. It’s cathartic to take on this analysis and it allows an owner to put every idea on paper. SWOT can be used at both the micro or the macro level. Let us help you with your own SWOT Analysis!
