A global mining firm I worked with had personnel issues and needed to improve the capabilities of it’s management team. We held a two-day conference to review the goals and I had a chance to objectively see everyone in action. We did a SWOT analysis as part of the planning, which uncovered some threats and weaknesses in the team. After two days of meetings the picture became much clearer. Some of their existing executives were the stars and would play a long term role. There were also some who needed a change and the plan became to help them “find” other opportunities. The executives who stood out, wanted a more unique approach… nothing radical, just some fine-tuning. I worked with the VP of Sales and it became clear that the person he had been leaning on, needed some coaching in order to deploy the plan and gain confidence in his role. The result was a promotion for him and several months of “coaching” to help him get over the gaps he didn’t know, he didn’t know.
I also worked with a technology company, building an intensive plan to expand globally to more countries and hire additional sales and engineering teams. I helped put an individual in place to assume the new role as Director of Sales. He was aptly qualified in terms of education and technical skills. What he lacked was the finesse to manage such a diverse group of sales people, both locally and remote. It takes a special talent to inspire people in time zones in Europe and Asia, from Canada. We built the business plan and I spent the better part of six months coaching this individual for success. Again, in this case, we worked on the gaps in his experience and over time, he became a competent Director of Sales for the company.
