What To look For in a Business Consultant

There are different Business Consulting styles to consider today. Some are more experienced in certain aspects of business and some are more generalists. At Asset Business Consulting, we focus on entrepreneurs, retail owners, franchisees and corporations.

Here are things to think about when hiring a Business Consultant:

  1. Make sure there is a shared mindset with your needs – the consultant should be able to empathize with your business goals in order to get the best results.
  2. A Business Consultant should be able drill down to the key issues you are dealing with and help uncover the gaps and what may be holding you back.
  3. Honesty is critical and this works best if the ultimate goal is to help you to create sustainable changes that will overcome the gaps in the business model.
  4. A Business Consultant should offer both a complimentary and contrarian ideas to consider – it’s important to create a systematic plan to build solutions.
  5. Most Business Consultants love to work within  standard business practices and it becomes a science to determine the best way to objectively work on the business.
  6. Find a Business Consultant who has both experience and empathy – they need to ask the right questions to uncover where the needs are.
  7. The best Business Consultants will want to set up a schedule and stick with it – getting into a routine is important because your own responsibilities are likely dynamic and weekly meetings are needed to coordinate with your business.
  8. If you are looking for help with a Merger or Partnership, try to find a Consultant with experience in these areas – for example, we have been involved in mergers, acquisitions and even an IPO – this serves us well for clients needing this help.
  9. During the interview process, ask about the types of businesses the Consultant has experience in – you may find that one who has always worked retail may not be as helpful if you are considering expanding nationally or globally.
  10. A Business Consultant may have a confidentiality contract with other clients and won’t be able  to share industry specifics of who they are working with – of course the Consultant should advise if there is any type of conflict.
