What Market to Go After

We’ve been marketing to a local Vancouver Island market as well as to global markets for over 25 years.  We’ve seen the markets swing like a pendulum however, nothing quite like this 2020 year. With a pandemic that few could have imagined back in January, our concepts about marketing have been thrown on such a wild ride. Within the past several months, the Chinese and American markets have become toxic for businesses. Should we be more focused than ever on our local client base?

The answer is that, it depends.  What are your key products or services and is there a general need or have you tried to address geographical targets? Where can you best be served growing your business?

The USA is quite obviously our largest nearby neighbour and still has great potential for marketing your products and services.  Since 2003, some of our own largest clients have been in the US. With that being the case, we have found that clients closer to home have become a much more vibrant target.

A few of our original clients have closed their businesses in the US while BC-based companies have managed to survive the changes to this economy. Our previous success with education, commercial products and franchises have pulled back quite a bit. We are getting more business from automotive, retail and publishing than in the past.

The explosion of Zoom-based marketing and communication have opened up new doors while many others have closed down temporarily or in some cases, permanently. We have used Zoom communication tools for some time now and as a result of this pandemic, we find this process makes it possible to conduct weekly meetings with clients and they have done the same with their own clients.

In my days at Motorola, ARC  International and Integrated Systems, I was travelling extensively across the US and Europe.  Those days have certainly been curtailed and yet, because we are an internet-based company, we are able to deal remotely with safety and efficiencies.
